- TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOU AND HOW WOVENISH BEGAN
I'm Kassandra Berardelli, the hands behind @wovenish! I'm a high school mathematics teacher who loves to create art in whatever little free time I have! It's funny, but having studied math and science, I never considered myself a creative person, but here we are! I have always loved working with yarns and thread (knitting, punch needle and embroidery), but I fell in love with weaving when I purchased my first loom at the start of the pandemic. After taking a few online workshops and practicing nearly every technique, Wovenish launched in March 2021 - and I can't believe how much support and love it has received.
The thing I value above all else is feeling cozy – think warm sheets, freshly brewed coffee, and a snoring husky. My goal with Wovenish is to bring that energy into all spaces. Between calming riverside walks and watering my plants, I handmake each of my pieces at my studio/home in Montreal.
- WHERE ARE YOU ORIGINALLY FROM, AND HAS YOUR UPBRINGING AND BACKGROUN SERVED AS INSPIRATION FOR YOUR WORK?
I'm from Montréal, Québec, Canada. Yes – I'm fully bilingual! French is my first language, although I've primarily spoken in English throughout my adult life! Montréal is known for its city culture. My dad always took me to the city center for the Mural Festival every year, where we would hunt out new art projects in the city. I definitely find inspiration in my hometown and the art within it.
- WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FROM?
Other than my hometown, I would say florals, nature photography, and ceramics most inspire me! I love looking at mediums outside of weaving to find colour combinations and compositions that I wouldn't have considered.
- WHAT IS YOUR COLOR PALETTE OF CHOICE (IF ANY)?
I first started weaving with neutrals - actually, no palette at all, just beige. Quickly, though, I realized I love working with colour and vibrant ones at that. I've been experimenting with palettes inspired by nature - like a bouquet of flowers or an ocean view. However, you will ALWAYS find ivory in my pieces as they accentuate the colours I use. Lately, I've loved working with blues and pinks
- IS THERE AN ARTIST OR PERSON THAT YOU LOOK UP TO AND WOULD LIKE TO COLLAB WITH?
I love anything made by Alysson Rousseau (@allyrous) and Faye Buller (@fayebuller).
- GIVE ME THREE WORDS YOU LIVE BY
Phone, Wallet, Keys (I'm a forgetful person)
- WHAT HAS MADE YOU HAPPY LATELY
After nearly ten years together and needing to postpone several times, my fiance and I finally got married! It was the most beautiful celebration; I would not have changed a single thing about our special day.
- WHAT FIBER ARE YOU CURIOUS ABOUT WORKING WITH LATELY?
I nearly fell off my chair when I saw that Ganxxet had released its new vegan fibres collection. I've always worked with Merino wools, but I cannot wait to try these fibres!
- ANY RECYCLING TIPS WITH LEFTOVER FIBERS OR MATERIALS?
I always use my leftover fibres when blending my handspun yarns. It is so fun to see my pieces re-appear in a different form. If you don't have a blending board or you don't intend to spin, I've loved seeing scraps in clear holiday ornaments! How cute!
