With this intermediate crochet pattern, you will create a beautiful, decorative storage basket with functional lid. Pro Tip: Tension is key!! Keep your stitches tight and consistent to achieve a sturdy basket with beautiful “V” shape.

SC = Single Crochet
CH = Chain
INC = increase (two single crochets in one stitch) ST = Stitch

Tools:
4.5mm crochet hook
GANXXET Raffia
GANXXET Felt
Scissors
Wide loop needle (big enough to easily fit raffia) Stitch Marker

BODY

Magic circle
6 SC in the circle, pull tight & slip stitch in first SC to finish round, CH 2

Now you’ll begin working stitches around the felt filler cord throughout the body of the basket.

Begin by holding the filler felt cord behind your working stitches and crochet around the felt. Be sure to keep the felt flat and straight, periodically pulling the longer end to prevent bunching between stitches.

Rounds:

Start working each stitch in single crochet + chain 1 (counts as one stitch)

  1. INC in each stitch (12 SC)

  2. SC + CH 1 in first stitch, skip chain from previous row, INC (SC + CH 1 twice) in next stitch. Repeat (18 SC)

  3. Begin regular single crochet stitches. NOTE: The rounds are unevenly increased.

  4. In this round, work only in SC stitches and skip CH stitches from previous row.

    a. INC FIRST STITCH, SC2. REPEAT (24)

  5. POSITION RIGHT SIDE OF WORK AS OUTSIDE OF BASKET. PUSH TO INDENT THE BACK TO BEGIN FORMING A

    CONE SHAPE.

  6. SC3, INC NEXT STITCH. REPEAT (30)

  7. INC, SC4. REPEAT (36)

  8. SC 2, INC NEXT STITCH **SC5, INC** REPEAT FROM  UNTIL 3 STITCHES REMAIN. SC 3 (42)

  9. SC6, INC, REPEAT (48)

  10. SC2 INC NEXT STITCH, **SC7, INC** REPEAT FROM UNTIL 5 STITCHES REMAIN, SC5 (54)

  11. Place your stitch marker in first stitch. Single Crochet entire round (54)

  12. Repeat round 11 (54)

  13. Cut filler cord. Loosen tension & SLIP STITCH IN EACH SC (54) Cut yarn. Weave in ends.

  14. Now let's create the LID

6 SC in the circle, pull tight & slip stitch in first SC to finish round, CH 2

You will now be working the entire lid in patterns of SC + ch 1 (counts as one stitch). For each row, work only in SC stitch from previous row and skip the CH space.

  1. INC (SC + 1 twice in each ST) (12SC / 24 TOTAL)

  2. SC1 + ch 1 in first stitch, INC in next ST, REPEAT (18SC / 36 TOTAL)

  3. INC first ST, SC2x (24SC / 48 TOTAL)

  4. SC3, INC next st (30SC / 60 TOTAL)

  5. INC next st, SC4 (36SC / 72 TOTAL)

Cut filler cord. Loosen tension & SLIP STITCH IN EACH SC (72)

PRO TIP: No need to worry if you end up with a slightly wavy lid. Just place a heavy book on top for a few minutes flatten the raffia.

LOOP HANDLE:

Cut 3 strands of raffia about 12 inches long. Using your needle, thread each of the three strands around one stitch in the center of the lid (see video / images). This will be the placement of your lid handle. SEPARATE strands into 3 sections. Tightly braid approx.. 3 inches. Split strands back into two sections. Insert around stitch directly opposite of the one that is holding the braid (see images). tie both sections into strong double knot. Weave or trim ends.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial!

Love,
