FAQs

Weaving involves interlacing two sets of yarn or thread at right angles to create fabric. The lengthwise threads are known as the warp, and the other threads that cross them are called weft or filling.

You weave the fabric using a shuttle or needle by passing the weft threads over and under the warp threads.

By changing the type of fiber you use or the pattern you follow, you can create a variety of fabrics and textures. It's also fun to experiment with different colors.

Every weaver needs a loom. This structure holds the warp threads in place and allows you to create fabric. You'll also need a tool to pass the yarn through the warp threads, such as a shuttle or needle.

Other essential supplies include fiber (such as yarn or roving wool), scissors, thread for your warp, and a bobbin.

As you gain more experience, you can invest in additional supplies such as combs, beaters, and weft sticks.

The best yarn for weaving depends on the type of fabric you want to create. Unfortunately, there isn't a one-size-fits-all yarn, as some are better suited for specific projects than others.

For example, our Merino Roving Wool is perfect for weaving soft and light projects, while our ethically sourced Sari Silk is ideal for creating colorful and unique fabrics.

If you’re just starting, our Cotton and Linen Flame yarns are great options because they’re versatile and easy to work with.

The most basic weaving patterns are plain weave, twill, and satin weave.

Plain weave is the simplest pattern to create, so it’s the one most people start with. It involves interlacing the warp and weft threads in an over-under pattern.

Twill is similar to plain weave, but you create a diagonal design instead of interlacing the threads in an alternating pattern.

Finally, the satin weave is a pattern that creates a smooth and shiny surface. This weave requires more skill than plain or twill weaving, as it involves passing the thread over multiple warp threads before going under one.

By combining some of these basic techniques, you can create even more patterns. With practice, you’ll be able to create unique and stunning pieces of fabric.

With a weaving loom, you can create a wide range of projects. Here are some of the most common things beginning weavers create:

- Wall hangings
- Table runners
- Scarves
- Rugs
- Coasters
- Placemats
- Dishcloths
- Tapestries

Weaving is a great way to craft a unique piece of art or a functional, handmade object!
